Almuerzo (lunch in Spanish) are Cuenca, Ecuador’s biggest meal.   Almuerzo’s in Cuenca refer to a set lunch.  They range in cost between $1.50 and $5.00.   They typically consist of a fresh glass of juice, a bowl of soup, rice, veggie, meat (beef, pork, chicken and occasionally fish) and a dessert.  Restaurants that serve Almuerzo’s are harder to find on weekends, but I have seen them.  I’ve noticed some Almuerzo restaurants open only for lunch.   And some look like people’s homes that are opened up only for this mid-day meal.  If you are vegetarian, most restaurants will give you extra of the non-meat as a substitution.  Lunch is the best value meal of the day and if you eat it all, can reduce your the amount of food you’ll want for dinner.

Ruta 72 is a quaint restaurant to grab a burger, sandwich, wings or ribs.  The decor is a Paris cafe retro kind of look.  We went there for lunch and our group had 2 different sandwiches and 2 almuerzos.  The almuerzos were a little more money ($3.75) but they were [...]

Los Parrilleros is a fantastic almuerzo restaurant.  It's about a buck more at $3.99 but this is not your typical meal.  They serve you toasted bread with some delicious toppings followed by a really flavorful soup.  The soup actually had florets of cauliflower and broccoli in it.  Not your typical [...]

Las Monjas is truly a step above the rest when it comes to almuerzos.  Cloth napkins and tablecloths set the scene that this isn't your normal almuerzo.  The cost of $4.25 is a little more than the typical $2.50 lunch, but if you want a different atmosphere to impress guests [...]
