Almuerzo (lunch in Spanish) are Cuenca, Ecuador’s biggest meal. Almuerzo’s in Cuenca refer to a set lunch. They range in cost between $1.50 and $5.00. They typically consist of a fresh glass of juice, a bowl of soup, rice, veggie, meat (beef, pork, chicken and occasionally fish) and a dessert. Restaurants that serve Almuerzo’s are harder to find on weekends, but I have seen them. I’ve noticed some Almuerzo restaurants open only for lunch. And some look like people’s homes that are opened up only for this mid-day meal. If you are vegetarian, most restaurants will give you extra of the non-meat as a substitution. Lunch is the best value meal of the day and if you eat it all, can reduce your the amount of food you’ll want for dinner.
